When is Canthoplasty necessary?

Eyelids protect the eyes by covering them and act as a natural barrier against any foreign materials. The act of blinking moistens the eye. Malposition of the eyelid may hurt the eyes, and improper eyelid functionality may obstruct vision. Canthoplasty may be deemed necessary for:

• Sagging eyelids where the upper eyelid is physically pulled downwards, obstructing the vision
• Eyelids that require reconstructive surgery after the removal of lesions in the inner or lateral area.
• Ectropion (a disorder in which the lower eyelid turns outward from the eye) or Entropion (a condition when the lower eyelid turns toward the eyeball and causes irritation)
• Eyelids that suffer from Keratoconjunctivitis (corneal exposure to injury).
• Any correction of eyelid deformity

Epicanthoplasty

This surgery, also known as therapeutic canthoplasty or inner corner eyelid surgery, can improve the beauty of the eye by creating an open eye. This method also helps to eliminate wrinkles of the Mongolian eye state, which is common in South Korea and other Asian nations. Epicanthoplasty should be performed carefully because the inner corner of the eye is considered to be the most delicate part around the eye and is prone to scarring after surgery.

Lateral Canthoplasty

Also known as external angle surgery. This eyelid surgery is a type of canthoplasty that reduces the inclination of the eye and makes the eye more elongated by stretching the eye. This is usually done along with lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

This method can treat drooping eyelids, which are often caused by the aging process.

How is canthoplasty surgery performed?

Canthoplasty is an outpatient procedure that can be performed under local anesthesia and intravenous sedation. During a canthoplasty, the surgeon cuts through the muscle from the inside of the eyelid to adjust the lateral canthus. Your surgeon can lift the intersection of the eyelids, in order to have the outside corner of the eye slightly raised in relation to the inner corner, giving an almond shape with smooth skin.

Good Candidate for Canthoplasty (cat-eye lift) Surgery?

The ideal candidate for canthoplasty is a person who has good physical and mental health. Smokers are advised to quit smoking at least 2 weeks before surgery. It is also recommended not to consume alcohol before and after surgery, not using alcohol will improve recovery and help prevent complications during surgery.

Canthoplasty candidates are those who have

• Canthoplasty and blepharoplasty can be performed through the same incisions, so it is recommended that both procedures be performed in one surgery to completely rejuvenate the appearance of the eyes.

What to expect after canthoplasty surgery?

• Try to control your emotions, as stress may worsen swelling or cause bleeding.
• Temporary bruising, swelling, numbness, skin tenderness, and headache are normal and last for up to 12 weeks after surgery.
• With nerve repair, itching may replace numbness over the head, which may last up to 6 months.
• Hair loss may occur along the incision lines. Normal hair growth around the incision usually resumes within a few weeks or months.
• Visible surgical symptoms should disappear completely within about 3 weeks.

Canthoplasty Recovery Period

• Recovery after canthoplasty takes 7 to 10 days, depending on the patient’s condition. Most patients experience some swelling and bruising that decreases during the first 2 weeks after surgery.
• As with all surgeries, partial rash and swelling may completely decrease in a few weeks to a few months, but it is small.
• Like all surgeries, partial redness and swelling may be completely gone in a few weeks to a few months.

Canthoplasty Post-Operative Instructions

Canthoplasty can be done in one day and you can return home the same day, but make sure someone can accompany you. You may feel pain and discomfort after surgery, but over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to control the pain.

Alternative Options for Canthoplasty

Canthopexy is a less invasive technique that does not cut the tendons, and only carefully sutured are used to stabilize the lateral canthal tendon. Hence, its recovery time is faster than canthoplasty. However, it is unusual that canthopexy is not associated with another form of lower eyelid surgery and is usually performed along with other operations.
